New label, new era!
Super wines from the great 2015 vintage
One of the things I love about Burgundy is that nothing stays constant. Domaines rise and fall. However, in recent years more are on the rise than decline as estates gather knowledge from far afield, often by way of their travel-wise children. Quality (and prices) continue to rise but prices still look reasonable when compared to First-Growth Bordeaux.
I have been drinking Burgundy for around 35 years. I have a snapshot in my mind about many producers based on their efforts of 10 or maybe 20 years ago. I am pleased to say I am often wrong. The new generation, or perhaps simply a new winemaker, has breathed life into many a domaine.
Bertagna Perriere Gate I have to say Domaine Bertagna fits into the latter category. I was offered the domaine recently and was a little undecided. But as I planned to be in Burgundy I decided to visit and taste the wines. My first Burgundy tasting of the trip was at Bertagna where Eva Reh-Siddle ran me through both 2014's and 2015's. The wines were universally excellent. The domaine has a fine portfolio from generic Burgundy, through a clutch of top Premier Crus to five Grand Crus.
To introduce the domaine to our portfolio and encourage you to try the wines of the "new" Bertagna. For the next week we offer all Bertagna 2015's at a 25% Introductory Pre Arrival Discount.

Domaine Georges Lignier Clos-St-Denis Grand Cru 2015

Tim Atkin MW: One of the parcels that make up the domaine's holdings of the Grand Cru is literally in Benoit Stehly's back garden. This old vine cuvée sees 50% whole bunches and shows the freshnes and fragrance of the Grand Cru. Silky, vivacious and skilfully oaked, with raspberry and loganberry sweetness and a light, tangy finish. 2022-32.
96 Points

Vinous: Stephen Tanzer:
Deep, bright red. Urgent crushed cherry and red raspberry fruit aromas are complicated and lifted by rose petal, white pepper, citrus peel and sexy oak; an essence of Clos Saint-Denis. Rich, layered and deep but also wonderfully brisk, with an exhilarating element of blood orange contributing to the impression of razor-sharp definition. Finishes with fine-grained, noble tannins, subtle rising length and a magically weightless impression. A wine of compelling purity and class, this beauty should be long-lived. The yield here was 30 hectoliters per hectare and the pH is 3.4, according to Stehly. Incidentally, this estate is the largest owner of vines in Clos Saint-Denis, at 1.49 hectares. Stehly picks this fruit in the morning because he uses a smaller tank in which it would be harder to chill the grapes. He continues to sell some of his Clos Saint-Denis to Lucien Le Moine, Marchand-Tawse and Jadot. 93-96 Points
