One of the things I love about Burgundy is that nothing stays constant. Domaines rise and fall. However, in recent years more are on the rise than decline as estates gather knowledge from far afield, often by way of their travel-wise children. Quality (and prices) continue to rise but prices still look reasonable when compared to First-Growth Bordeaux.
I have been drinking Burgundy for around 35 years. I have a snapshot in my mind about many producers based on their efforts of 10 or maybe 20 years ago. I am pleased to say I am often wrong. The new generation, or perhaps simply a new winemaker, has breathed life into many a domaine.
Bertagna Eva I have to say Domaine Bertagna fits into the latter category. I was offered the domaine recently and was a little undecided. But as I planned to be in Burgundy (where I am writing this now) I decided to visit and taste the wines. My first Burgundy tasting of the trip was at Bertagna where Eva Reh-Siddle ran me through both 2014's and 2015's. The wines were universally excellent. The domaine has a fine portfolio from generic Burgundy, through a clutch of fine Premier Crus to five Grand Crus.
Today, the Clos St-Denis was an absolute show-stopper. Bertagna own half a hectare of this Grand Cru.
The domaine has not encouraged critics in recent years so you will have to rely on my tasting note. To make it even more tempting I have a special offer for today only. To introduce the domaine to our portfolio and encourage you to try the wines of the "new" Bertagna I offer this super wine at a 30% Pre Arrival Discount. The offer is only for paid orders placed today. This is a cracker wine from a top red vintage.

Darren HarrisFrom 35 year old vines. Vibrant, deep red colour.
An exuberent nose of red-black fruits (cherry, raspberry) and spice, a touch of sandalwood, a hint of smoke. On the palate this wine shows Clos St-Denis is a great terroir. The wine is deep and silky with great fruit weight. It is intense but light on its feet. The new oak already all but swallowed up by the multi-layered flavours. The tannins are long and fine and are complemented by the citric tang that makes Clos St-Denis unique. Considering this wine was bottled just last week this is a remarkable showing. I can't wait to see it with a little time in bottle.

Domaine Georges Lignier Clos-St-Denis Grand Cru 2015
A great comparison with the wine alongside. Both are stunningly good.
Tim Atkin MW: One of the parcels that make up the domaine's holdings of the Grand Cru is literally in Benoit Stehly's back garden. This old vine cuvée sees 50% whole bunches and shows the freshnes and fragrance of the Grand Cru. Silky, vivacious and skilfully oaked, with raspberry and loganberry sweetness and a light, tangy finish. 2022-32.

Vinous: Stephen Tanzer:
Deep, bright red. Urgent crushed cherry and red raspberry fruit aromas are complicated and lifted by rose petal, white pepper, citrus peel and sexy oak; an essence of Clos Saint-Denis. Rich, layered and deep but also wonderfully brisk, with an exhilarating element of blood orange contributing to the impression of razor-sharp definition. Finishes with fine-grained, noble tannins, subtle rising length and a magically weightless impression. A wine of compelling purity and class, this beauty should be long-lived. The yield here was 30 hectoliters per hectare and the pH is 3.4, according to Stehly. Incidentally, this estate is the largest owner of vines in Clos Saint-Denis, at 1.49 hectares. Stehly picks this fruit in the morning because he uses a smaller tank in which it would be harder to chill the grapes. He continues to sell some of his Clos Saint-Denis to Lucien Le Moine, Marchand-Tawse and Jadot. 93-96 Points
