Last month I visited Doudet-Naudin to taste through a range of aged wines from their cellars. Doudet has a reputation of cellaring wines for the restaurant market in France and overseas where aged wines are very much appreciated.
In recent years they have made the wines available to selected importers and we have been fortunate to enjoy the riches in their cellars.
We drew the cork on about a dozen aged wines and I selected five that I thought were particularly good. And then we did some tough negotiating!
The nett result is that I have purchased some seriously good aged Burgundy at prices that are below the current release! Christophe wasn't too happy but I am delighted. And I can pass the savings on to you.
If you are a fan of aged Burgundy, or would ike to experience the pleasures of properly cellared wines that have never left the French domaine where they were made, this represents a terrific opportunity.
Les Vergelesses is one of the prime sites in Savigny, lying just about the Pernand-Verglesses vineyard of the same name. The sandy-marl soil with iron-rich oolite in the upper levels produces a wine with great perfume and style.
The 2001 vintage has turned out to be one of the great surprises of the decade. Originally overshadowed by the 2002 vintage, time has seen many Burgundy aficionados favour 2001. The wines have aged wonderfully and gained complexity. More often than not they are fresher than their 2002 counterparts due to their acidity.
This wine will be $99.95 when it arrives (if there is any left). Our normal Pre Arrival discount price would be $84.95. I have negotiated a super deal and am pleased to offer the wine at a remarkable $65.00 a bottle. Fantastic value for a 15 year old Premier Cru!

Darren Harris: Powerful nose of plum, mineral and dark berries. A little Savigny earth. Palate is deep, with sweet fruit finishing with fresh acidity. Still quite muscular. The wine is energetic with fine length. An unashamedly old-style Burgundy where new oak played no part. Hence the ability to age so gracefully. The benefits of perfect storage in the cool, dark cellars of the domaine are evident.
Aged Burgundies are no longer available in the quantities they once were. This is a great opportunity to secure a 15-year-old wine less than the price of the current vintage.
