The 2016 vintage in Chablis is now complete. For almost everyone 2016 was a catastrophic year. Frost and hail in May, followed by a very hot summer, saw production levels of about 50% of usual.
Domaine Gautherin contacted me overnight to update me on their situation and provide their latest price list. Not suprisingly they have been compelled to increase prices to assist with the shortfall in 2016.
The domaine has small quantities of some 2014's left but for most wines has moved onto the 2015 vintage.
Our 2014's arrived a month or so back and were purchased at the old prices. Should we reorder you can expect a price increase of at least 10%.
We all know what a wonderful Chablis vintage 2014 is. If you want some Chablis to drink over the next few years I really do suggest you stock up on the 2014's. 2015 does not have the mineral backbone that 2014 does and 2016 is too early to judge - however, we know it will be in short supply and more expensive.
Domaine Raoul Gautherin
have been making wines for eight generations. The estate is just over 16 hectares in size including 1.2 hectares of Grand vineyards - Les Clos, the hard-to-find Grenouilles and Vaudesirs.
Perhaps inspired by their wonderful old world label the wines are classically styled,
brimming with freshness and mineral drive.
The wines are greatly appreciated in France and are very well reviewed by the French critics. Gilbert and Gaillard, who score much harder than many of the English-speaking critics, have reviewed the 2014's very well.
We have the following 2014 wines remaining from our first shipment:
64 bottles Chablis
19 bottles Chablis 1er Cru Mont du Milieu
36 bottles Chablis Vaudesirs Grand Cru
34 bottles Chablis Grenouilles Grand Cru
29 bottles Chablis Les Clos Grand Cru
Until midnight tomorrow you can buy the last of these wines at what were our Pre Arrival Prices and save 15%. Once again the wines are incredible value. Where else can you buy a Grand Cru from Burgundy for under $90.00 a Bottle? As well as Le Clos Gautherin make the hard-to-find Grand Cru Grenouilles. Check the reviews!
