The Superb 2013 Burgundies from Domaine Castagnier. In Stock at Pre Arrival Prices

Castagnier 2013 Superb Header
A lineup of simply terrific 2013's!

Last night's Castagnier dinner (click here to see the wine lineup) threw up some real surprises. For me the biggest one was just how terrific his 2013's are. I expected the 2012's to outperform the 2013's but that was not the case.

All of Jerome's wines have an enticing red-blue-black colour but it was the precision and transparency combined with gorgeous aromatics that made the 2013's such a hit with the attendees.

Considering the wines arrived just weeks ago they really looked superb.

For the next few days I am offering the in-stock 2013's at the original Pre Arrival Prices. If you love classic Burgundy you really should consider these wines. Even the Bourgogne exhibited serious character.

Below are my picks from each of the brackets at the dinner. To view the full range of 2013's click here.

Bourgogne 2013
Normally $49.95
Special $42.50

Castagnier Bourgogne Label Jerome's entry level red but what an example! Jasper Morris MW says: Bright purple with a vibrant fruit, this is really striking. Made from vines are situated just below the RN74 towards Gevrey, it has weight and intensity, and good oak balance. Lovely finish, hard to do better for Bourgogne Rouge. We all agreed last night - it is a knockout for the price.

Chambolle-Musigny 2013
Normally $107.95
Special $91.50

Castagnier Chambolle label new Chambolle should be aromatic and feminine with supple red-black fruits. This 2013 has it in spades with a creamy texture from old vines and the lovely acid spine of the vintage. Jasper Morris MW: The vineyard here is Aux Echanges, with vines planted in 1934. Bright purple, the nose is backward but shows promise. This demonstrates quite a firm style on the palate though with good dark red fruit and length.

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers 2013
Normally $179.95
Special $152.95

Castagnier Cazetiers Label Located high on the hill alongside Clos St Jacques is the 1er Cru Les Cazetiers. It makes a finer, more mineral wine that its neighbour and I find that more to my taste. This 2013 is aromatic, complex and all but Grand Cru quality. It is a terrific bottle of wine.

Clos de Vougeot 2013
Normally $259.95
Special $220.95

Castagnier Clos Vougeot Jerome prices his Clos de Vougeot above the more popular Clo de la Roche, Clos St Denis and Charmes Chambertin. Last night we tasted them all and I can see why. The Clos de Vougeot comes from a a parcel behind the chateau up the slope towards Flagey-Echezeaux. It is stylish, classic Vougeot but with unexpectedly fine tannins and a delicious depth of fruit. It is aromatic and perhaps one can see a little Grands Echezeaux character and style in the wine (after all it is just over the wall). It was the wine of the night! A real beauty!

The wines of Domaine Castagnier have taken off since Jerome took over in 2007 and last night showed just what a fine winemaker he is. Tim Atkin MW (amongst others) now has Castagnier firmly in his top 25 Domaines to Watch. You should too!
