10 of the Best 2014 Chablis

2014 Chablis has captured the attention of wine lovers worldwide. It is a stunning vintage. And as good as it is now the winemakers tell me it will be even better after a year or two in bottle.

We had hoped to have a big range for sale when the wines arrived in Australia but we are starting to sell out of numerous wines. The wines arrive in two weeks and stock levels are very low.

Today we feature 10 of the Best 2014 Chablis. The ratings are from different reviewers but I assure you they all appeal for their mineral, saline, classic Chablis character. They are super!

They are serious value in today's wine world and if you are partial to Chablis you should not miss them. They are simply super!

Tim Atkin MW:
Among the best Chablis of the vintage (several of them from Les Clos), the Bichot example comes from two parcels in the middle and at the top of the slope. A third of the wine is oakfermented, but you barely notice it, such is the racy, savoury purity and tension of the fruit. Every Chablis lover should have a glass of this in their cellar. 97 Points

Domaine Alain Geoffroy Chablis Les Clos Grand Cru 2014
Normally $147.00
Pre Arrival Price $125.00

Geoffroy Chablis Clos Label Bill Nanson "The Burgundy Report":  Round and deep, clearly there's barrel here, with vanilla cream notes. Round, beautifully textured, direct, intense, beautiful clarity and a really insinuating acidity but without pain. A really excellent line of flavour in the finish. Yum - clearly too oaky today but hopefully this will fade - and they are anyway only just commercialising 2011 - "As they are now ready" says Nathalie.

Gilbert & Gaillard:
Appealing clear light yellow. Delicate nose with vegetal, fruity and peppery accents. Superlative quality texture on the palate, freshness and aromas that start to open up on the finish in a mineral, fruity and spicy style. 93 Points (they are traditionally very tough scorers!)

Vignobles Dampt Chablis Les Preuses Grand Cru 2014
Normally $10.95
Pre Arrival Price $93.50

Dampt Preuses Label Bill Nanson "The Burgundy Report": Hmm, this is lovely - wide, faintly floral, modestly mineral. Bigger in all directions a growing brightness of flavour rather than a line - round, complex, indeed a little exciting, layered, waves of finishing flavour. Lovely!!!

Domaine Raoul Gautherin Chablis Grenouilles Grand Cru 2014
Normally $149.95
Pre Arrival Price $127.50

Gautherin Grenouilles Label A seldom seen vineyard.
Gilbert and Gaillard:
Clear light gold. Delicate nose showing meadow notes and a lemony and mineral touch. The palate centres on intense freshness which enhances the same clear-cut aromas dominated by a crisp, mineral and even aniseed dimension. Obviously needs cellaring. 93 Points
Domaine Alain Geoffroy Chablis 1er Cru Vau Ligneau 2014
Normally $52.50
Pre Arrival Price $44.50

Geoffory Vau Ligneau Bill Nanson "The Burgundy Report":
About 2-2.5 hectares - 'Not a big parcel for us! The vines are now 30 years old and the cuvée gets more and more interesting.' Only tank elevage.
A narrower nose but suggesting a tight core of fruit and aroma somewhere below. Bigger in the mouth, lots more flavour complexity - this is very expressive - it tastes great. Yum!
Domaine Collet Chablis 1er Cru Montee de Tonnerre 2014
Normally $64.95
Pre Arrival Price $54.95
21 bottles left
Collet Montee Label BlackTim Atkin MW:Another excellent wine from Romain Collet, combining fruit from Chapelots and Montée de Tonnerre itself. Subtly oaked and refined, it shows the breed of this Premier Cru: plush, smooth and textured yet underpinned by vivid acidity and minerality. 2017-25.
94 Points

Domaine Long-Depaquit Chablis 1er Cru Vaucopins 2014
Normally $76.50
Pre Arrival Price $64.95

Long-Depaquit Vaucopins Label
Tim Atkin MW: One of a series of remarkable Chablis from Long-Depaquit in 2014, Vaucopins (spelt with an "s" and without the "u" on this label) this right bank white is very stylish, fresh and mineral, showing hints of candle wax, brine and fresh earth with a hint of oak. 95 Points
Vignobles Dampt Chablis 1er Cru Les Fourneaux 2014
Normally $59.95
Pre Arrival Price $50.95

Dampt Fourneaux Label
Bill Nanson "The Burgundy Report":
Higher-toned, bright, almost oysters with a twist of lemon. A little more mouth puckering but only for a second or two, then a flowing flavour and good complexity take over. A bright and wide finish that has a nice agrume aspect. Tasty wine!

L and C Poitout Petit Chablis Franc de Pied L'Inextinct 2014
Normally $149.95
Pre Arrival Price $127.50
33 bottles left

Poitout Inextinct Label The Louis and Catherine L'Inextinct Franc de Pied Petit Chablis is made from a tiny plot of 0.55 hectares of ungrafted pre-phylloxerra vines. Situated on a plateau on the northwestern commune of Villy, the soils of clay retain enough water in the winter making it inhabitable to the phylloxera louse that devastated many vineyards in Europe in the late 19th century.
The Australian: Petit chablis is the jumping-off point to the inimitable wines of the Chablis region. That said, there is nothing entry level about this 100 per cent chardonnay wine, made from ungrafted 100-plus-year-old pre-phylloxera vines. The first impression is of an extra dimension of old vine plushness coating the intense, classically chablis attributes of line, drive and minerality. Grand cru power without the plump. About 80 dozen produced each year.

Dampt Chevalier Label

Vignoble Dampt Bourgogne Chevalier D'Eon Blanc 2014

Bourgogne Blanc from the Chablis region!

The Tonnerre vignoble is both young and old. The vines were present already during Roman times. From the 10th century and onwards the monks began to develop the vignoble. At the end of the 19th century the Tonnerrois vines covered more than 5000 hectares. Then phylloxera almost entirely wiped out the vineyards in the area. Today, after extensive replanting during the last decades, it covers 240 hectares and in 2006 it received an appellation of its own - Bourgogne Tonnerre.

In our search for classic 2014 Chablis we came across exceptional some Bourgogne from the Tonnerre region. Talk about high achievers! Read the notes and get your order in!

Bill Nanson:
All chardonnay. A mix of Portlandian and Kimmerigian, some parts almost Chablis, other parts only 10km from Champagne.
A relatively bright and nicely fresh nose - this could be a Chablis. Nice texture, slightly layered and still with a hint of salinity to edge the fruit. If I told you this was villages Chablis - you'd happily believe me.

Normally $30.95 a Bottle
Pre Arrival $26.50
Case of 12 Bottles $297.00 (=$24.75 a Bottle)
