Here's a serious bargain for the lover of great wine.
Riesling is one of the classic grape varieties. At the moment it is not in favour however those with an experienced palate know and understand what a magnificent wine it can be, especially when you combine classic regions, great vineyards and top vintages.
Alsace is the home of Riesling in France. Grapes have been grown in the region since the 4th century. In 1975 a bill was passed to recognize the premium sites and in 1983 the first wines were awarded Grand Cru status. The system is very similar to that used in Burgundy and much of the decision was based on historical information dating back to the 14th century.
To the north of the delightful walled town of Riquewihr lies the Grand Cru vineyard of Schoenenbourg. The vineyard runs along the rather steep south and south-east flanks of the Schoenenbourg hillside, at an altitude of 265 to 380 metres. There is a lot of stone in the soil and this, combined with the altitude, makes for a very mineral wine with great ageing potential. Renowned ever since the early Middle Ages, the wines of the Schoenenbourg were famous throughout northern Europe in the 16th century. The great Swiss cartographer, Merian, cited in 1663: "The Schoenenbourg, which produces the most noble wine of this country". Voltaire owned several vineyards here.

Whilst Grand Cru White Burgundy has sky-rocketed in recent years the price of Grand Cru Riesling from Alsace has remained very affordable.
Vintage 2010 was an exceptional year for dry Riesling. Antonio Galloni says "2010 are extremely mineral and high in acidity, and have exceptional aging potential....2010 is outstanding, quite possibly one of the greatest Alsace vintages of all time."

IWC Tropy 2013 If that is not high enough praise we offer the Trophy Winning Alsatian Riesling from the International Wine Challenge 2013. And at only $41.95 a bottle! That is an incredible bargain!

The history of Château Isenbourg is nothing if not dramatic. It is based in the commune of Rouffach, 8km south of Colmar in the Haut-Rhin district of Alsace. The name 'Isenbourg' has more than one possible origin: either from Eisenburg - 'the iron castle', or from Isisburg - 'the castle of Isis', the Egyptian goddess also venerated by the Romans. The area has indeed been occupied since Roman times, and some remnants suggest dedication to vine growing since then.

After a tumultuous journey through the centuries the chateau and its holdings were sold in 1974. Management of the vines and winemaking is handled by the team at Dopff and Irion.

The domaine is very special as it is the only Chateau with a Clos (walled vineyard) in Alsace. The Clos Château Isenbourg is a unique place for the vines thanks to a specific configuration of the vineyards. It consists of a microclimate which is reinforced by the surrounding walls which exercise a role in heat control and favour grape maturation. The hills on which the vineyard is located are renowned for low rainfall and exceptional levels of sunshine.

The domaine produces an unusual white wine that they call "Les Tourelles". It is a field blend of Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Gewurztraminer. Only 4,000 bottles are produced annually.

The 2010 (a great vintage in Alsace) is a multi-award winner across the globe. Its biggest award was the Trophy and Gold Medal for the Best Old World White Wine at the Japan Wine Challenge 2012. The Japan Wine Challenge has been running since 1997 and is judged by some of the world's best known professionals including Masters of Wine and wine journalists. It is considered one of the top five wine competitions in the world. The wine was up against wines from across the globe.
