97 Points for the new vintage of the wonderful Cepparello!

Great scores, super drinking! Don't miss these new releases...
Paolo De Marchi remains one of the most forward-thinking producers in Italy. His 100% Sangiovese Cepparello was a ground breaking wine in the 1980s, when Sangiovese was four-letter word and international varieties were all the rage. Now the Gran Selezione is hot and there has never been more focus on pure Sangiovese in Chianti Classico.

So what does De Marchi do? Simply make one of the greatest Tuscan wines ever with his Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, which is, ironically, a blend of Sangiovese and Bordeaux varieties. So, now the top wine at Isole e Olena - an estate that has championed Sangiovese for three-plus decades (far before it was fashionable to do so) - is now a blend. In 2011, De Marchi added a dollop of Trebbiano to freshen up his Cepparello. What's old is new again? At the end of the day, none of that really matters. "I want to make the best wine I can. Period," says De Marchi in his typical self-deprecating style. Make no mistake about it, these are some of the greatest wines being made anywhere in the world. Chapeau.

Today we present the new releases from Isole e Olena as well as some back vintages. You will need to act quickly as stocks are limited.
Isole e Olena Cepparello IGT 2012
$121.50 a Bottle
$267.95 a 1500ml MAGNUM
12 of each available

Cepparello Label Antonio Galloni, Vinous:

The 2012 Cepparello is magnificent. Radiant, pliant and super-expressive, the 2012 offers magnificent intensity, with silky tannins wrapped around a core of rich, dark-toned fruit. The intensity of the fruit suggests a warm vintage, but the structure is more medium in body and typical of a cooler year. Today, the 2012 gives the impression it will drink well pretty much upon release, but history has taught me Cepparello often shuts down in bottle. Either way, the 2012 is superb.

Isole e Olena Cepparello IGT 2011
$118.50 a Bottle
12 available

Cepparello Label
Antonio Galloni, Vinous: The 2011 Cepparello is wonderfully aromatic, lifted and precise. Sweet rose petal, mint, crushed raspberries, cinnamon and kirsch grace the palate in a silky, aromatically expressive wine endowed with pure pedigree. Paolo De Marchi added a dollop of Trebbiano to give the 2011 a little extra freshness that the vintage itself could not provide. The white Trebbiano was once used widely in the production of Chianti Classico. Today, it is rarely used in this way. 95 Points

Isole e Olena Cepparello IGT 2009
$99.75 a Bottle
12 available

Cepparello Label
Antonio Galloni, Vinous: The 2009 Cepparello is gorgeous. It brings together the radiance and ripeness of a warmer year with the medium-bodied structure of a cooler vintage. Today the 2009 is a bit reticent and appears headed for a period of dormancy. From time to time hints of its ultimate potential come through in attractive layers of dark red fruit. The rich, textured finish bodes well for the future. Paolo De Marchi describes 2009 as a year with a cold spring and a hot summer that also brought hail in early August. The 2009 Cepparello is clearly one of the wines of the vintage. 95 Points
