Rousseau Chambertin - One of the Greatest Wines of Burgundy

Domaine Armand Rousseau Chambertin is one of Burgundy's most desirable wines.
The unique label sets the mood for something very special in the bottle. This is Gevrey-Chambertin at its most majestic and few would question that Rousseau makes the most sublime example.
Rousseau's Chambertin holding were acquired between 1920 and 1994 by Armand and Charles Rousseau and today they are the largest owners of this prime vineyard.
Charles Rousseau Sadly, Charles, a true gentleman, passed away in May this year. It was during his tenure that Domaine Rousseau rose to become one of the most desirable Burgundy addresses. Today, international demand is as large as it has ever been.
From two brilliant private cellars we are delighted to offer a selection of the very best vintages of Rousseau Chambertin.
All wines have been professionally cellared and are in lovely condition. Prices are per bottle.

This is a rare opportunity to secure some iconic Burgundies.

Rousseau Chambertin Label Burghound:
It's as though the Clos de Bèze and Chambertin have switched places in 2006 as here the nose is positively kaleidoscopic with a huge range of aromas and spice elements along with a hint of menthol. There is excellent freshness and vibrancy to the pure, round, rich and focused full-bodied flavors that carry obvious muscle and minerality on the deep, powerful and hugely long finish. This is an extremely impressive effort and one of the finest wines of the vintage. Not surprisingly, this hasn't changed a great deal since my last review except that the length is now even more phenomenal and the supporting tannins are a bit more apparent. While it's true that the balance is so good that that this could be enjoyed now, it would be unfortunate to leave so much upside potential unrealized and thus I would advise waiting for at least 5 more years first though it should easily be capable of rewarding 8 to 10. Tasted several times since my original review with consistent notes in the sense that they have become progressively more positive. 96 Points

Rousseau Chambertin Label Burghound: A heady, exotic Burgundy, thA still mildly toasty nose features remarkably dense yet elegant aromas of deeply pitched yet extremely cool and restrained red and blue fruit aromas that are nuanced by a broad range of earth, game and underbrush hints. There is an utterly beguiling purity to the relatively refined but muscular medium full-bodied plus flavors that are strikingly complex, vibrant and perfectly balanced before culminating in a gorgeously long finish. This is brimming with upside development potential and while it too will require plenty of patience, its class and grace are such that it can be enjoyed now though I would strongly counsel waiting. In a word, magnificent. Tasted twice this year with consistent notes.

Rousseau Chambertin Label
Stephen Tanzer, Vinous:
Medium red, a bit less saturated than the Clos de Beze. Pungent aromas of wild red berries, smoke, earth, iron and wild herbs. Almost shockingly silky in the mouth, but with crushed-stone minerality lending force to the blackberry, licorice and earth flavors. Incredibly sappy but edge-free wine with an explosive, endless finish that titillates the salivary glands. Longer than the Clos de Beze but that wine is a bit sweeter today, with darker, more exotic flavors. This Chambertin is not yet showing its flesh but if it puts on weight with extended bottle aging, which I expect it to do, it may eventually merit a perfect score. A monument of the vintage. 98+ Points

Rousseau Chambertin Label
Burghound: Discreet wood sets off a highly reserved and not quite as overtly ripe nose of dark berries, earth, and animale nuances that are trimmed in notes of spice, in particular anise, sandalwood and exotic tea scents. There is superbly good detail and focused power to the large-scaled flavors that also possess an outstanding concentration of structure buffering dry extract that imparts a sappy texture to the intensely mineral-driven and explosively long finish. This is a youthfully austere example of the genre that is presently quite compact and linear and thus will require at least a decade to flesh out and unwind but if you have the patience to wait it should be a great Chambertin in 20+ years. 97 Points
