Outstanding Value but already in very short supply

Domaine Fernand and Laurent Pillot comprises just 15 hectares of vines located primarily in Chassagne-Montrachet. In addition to the vines in Chassagne the domaine has holdings in Pommard and Volnay as a result of of the marriage of Laurent to Marie- Anne. Despite the small size of the domaine their holdings include many of Chassagne-Montrachet's best Premier Cru sites.

Pillot Morgeots Bottle The Domaine is included in Remington Norman's tome "The Great Domaines of Burgundy". Norman says "The cream of the cellar is undoubtedly the splendid range of Chassagnes. Lightest of the premier crus is Vergers, a crisp fresh wine for a vineyard with little soil and hard rock underneath. In such an extended, diverse vineyard as Morgeot, location has an important bearing on quality. Laurent has plots in Petit Clos and Fairendes, both with relatively fine soils, in contrast to the heavier, richer ground of low-lying sectors. The wines in Petit Clos give a wine of richness but also vivacity whereas the older plants in Fairendes contribute depth and finesse. Denser and richer is Vide-Bourse, a tiny premier cru adjoining Batard-Montrachet, which gives a fine wine, a little more backward when young but with excellent ageing potential. Noblest of all is the Grandes Ruchottes. To Laurent's surprise, every year, whatever the weather conditions, the vines give little bunches of small berries. The wine is ripe and powerful with mouth-filling substance and considerable length, yet greater finesse than the other premier crus. It essence, this is Laurent's grand cru and a worthy testament to his skill."

Our allocation of 2014 whites from Pillot was small and already much of it has sold. We are too early for Burghound notes but I can tell you that I tasted the wines at the Grand Jours de Bourgogne recently and was very impressed. For wines from the magnificent 2014 vintage they are extraordinarily well priced - Premier Crus for under $100 - that is a steal! If you love white Burgundy these are a must-have.

2014

2014 Burgundy

Not to be missed!

I have spent the last week in Burgundy tasting, tasting, tasting. Somewhere around 800 wines I think!

Most of the wines have been from the 2014 vintage and I can report that there are many exceptional wines.

2014 Chablis. The 2014 vintage is being extremely highly praised. I tasted a couple of hundred 2014's on Monday and I can see what the hype is all about. If you love classic, mineral, acid Chablis these are a must. Not everyone succeeded but there are a lot of wonderful wines. We don't have much at the moment but I was so impressed I will be adding a 2 or 3 makers to our portfolio. To view what is currently on offer click here.

2014 White Burgundy. Some are calling it the vintage of a lifetime. I can tell you that the best wines are truly exceptional. Very pure and driven with wonderful acidity. Many domaines have sold out or allocated most of their production. If you love White Burgundy jump in. What we have left is not large and will not last. A few new wines to come but not a lot! Click here for current availability. Don't miss out!

2014 Red Burgundy. The critics have ensured that the 2014 reds have been overshadowed by the whites. However, they really are extremely good. They are not huge and tannic. The wines are deeply coloured and are very transparent with the terroir singing. They are quite pleasant in this early phase but need more time to blossom. I really like the vintage and have found some exciting new red producers to add to our portfolio. More later. This is what is currently available. You won't be disappointed.
