Update: we have just a few seats left to our de Vogue Musigny Dinner. On Wednesday I met with de Vogue winemaker Francois Millet at the domaine and in addition to tasting the range of 2015's from barrel we discussed at some length this coming dinner. Francois was impressed that we have such a lineup available in Australia for Burgundy lovers to taste. He has provided information which we will incorporate in our notes for the evening.
"Musigny is one of Burgundy's outstanding crown jewels, on a par with Chambertin. In fact, if forced to state a preference, I would place Musigny ahead of Chambertin - the finest of all grand crus excepting perhaps some of the monopoles of Vosne-Romanee." says Jasper Morris in Inside Burgundy.
In 1110AD the monks of Citeaux received land in Musigny. Unlike other Burgundy crus the land was not taken over by a single owner nor was it enclosed within walls like Vougeot.
Today, the Grand Cru Musigny measures 10.85 hectares. With an enormous holding of 7.12 hectares it is no wonder Comte Georges de Vogue is the best known maker of this magnificent vineyard. The domaine dates back to 1450 when Jean Moisson constructed the first building. It passed through the female line until 1766 when Catherine Bouhier married Cerice-Melchior de Vogue.
Unlike many prestigious vineyards, the family managed to retain control of Musigny through the French Revolution. The domaine is now in the hands of the granddaughters of Georges de Vogue and the wine is made by the serious Francois Millet.
Musigny, particularly from de Vogue, is a wine that requires time to express itself. At this dinner we taste ten consecutive vintages of de Vogue Musigny Vieilles Vignes from 1999 to 2008. At between 8 and 17 years of age we will see the development of the wine, as well obtaining a picture of intage variation in Burgundy.
Before the reds we will taste two vintages of de Vogue Bourgogne Blanc. De Vogue is the only maker with a Grand Cru vineyard white in the Cote de Nuits. However, the vines are young as the vineyard was uprooted in 1986 and the domaine has decided to label the wine as Bourgogne until the vines reach an acceptable age.
This is an amazing lineup of Grand Cru Burgundy for one evening. Our first table sold out very quickly and already the second table is 50% sold. If you would like to attend please book in soon, we do not have the wines for a third table!
