White and Red.....
Le Clos du Caillou, a 53 hectare wine estate with Côtes-du-Rhône and Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellations, is located in Courthézon in the South of France.
The property came in possession of the Pouizin family in 1956. Until 1996 the property was run by Claude Pouizin, who through 1993 sold most of his yield to negociants. In 1996 his daughter Sylvie and son-in-law Jean-Denis Vacherons took charge and the quality of the wines from property rapidly rose.
The 2012 Chateauneufs and 2013 Cotes-du-Rhones are in stock. These are wines of serious character, even at the Cotes-du-Rhone end. Of course, wines like the Chateauneuf-du-Pape Reserve are not to be missed if you love Southern Rhones.
The reviews for the wines are very strong. This week we offer all Clos du Caillou wines in stock at a 15% discount.
2012 Chateauneuf-du-Pape Les Quartz
Usual Price $159.95
Special Offer $135.95
This wine comes from parcels of land in the lieu-dit "The Cassanets" which are composed of pebbles and sandy subsoil. The Grenache, which comprises 85% of the blend, was planted between 1956 and 1958. A parcel of Shiraz, in the lieu-dit "The Bédines", is on a soil composed of sand makes up the remaining 15%.
Wine Advocate - Jeb Dunnuck: The 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape les Quartz is one of the more powerful, structured 2012s and exhibits wonderful black raspberry, creamy licorice, smoked earth and crushed rock/liquid minerality. Medium to full-bodied and classically styled on the palate, with a broad, expansive feel, it has sweet fruit, plenty of tannin and beautiful length. Give it another year or two and drink bottles through 2027. 94 Points
2012 Chateauneuf-du-Pape Reserve
Usual Price $250.00
The Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve is a wine made only in the best vintages. The vineyard is composed of 60% Grenache (planted in 1930 in La Guigasse) and 20% Mourvèdre and 20% Syrah (planted in 1939 in Les Bedines). The soil, composed of sand, gives the wine freshness and finesse.
Vinous - Josh Raynolds: Inky ruby. Explosive aromas of red and dark berries are complicated by suggestions of star anise, potpourri and smoky minerals. Rich yet lithe on the palate, offering sweet black raspberry and cola flavors and an intense note of candied lavender. Made in a rich yet graceful style, finishing with superb clarity and length and sneaky tannins that come on late. One of my favorite wines of the vintage and almost shockingly approachable now. 2018-2030. 95 Points
