Clape Cornas - a Northern Rhone Classic

Clape Cornas Header
A Classic from the Northern Rhone

Auguste Clape is regarded as one of the pioneers of the northern Rhone. His Syrahs from Cornas are amongst the most celebrated wines of France.

The Clapes have been vignerons for many generations. They were the first to bottle their own wine and today continue to produce wines of serious quality with little fanfare.

The domaine is only 8 hectares in size but the steep terraces necessitate manual working of the vines. In Cornas t hey own pieces of such prime parcels as Reynard, Les Sabarottes  and La Côte , as well as Les Mazards  and Pied La Vigne .

The soil is largely granite-based and the vines, for the flagship Clape Cornas, are 30-60 years old. The younger vines are used for the Cornas Renaissance. Clape Cornas is capable of very long cellaring.

For a taste of the old-style Syrah from the fabulous, sculptured slopes of the Northern Rhône, Auguste Clape's Cornas is the only place to start.

We offer the Cornas and Renaissance as well two affordable Syrah cuvees.

Clape Cornas Label Wine Advocate - Jeb Dunnuck: More powerful, backwards and inky than the Renaissance, the 2013 Cornas exhibits classic notes of cold steel, burning embers, crushed rock and inky purple fruit. Full-bodied, concentrated and with high, yet sweet, tannin, it's a serious wine that will have two decades of longevity.
