11 Bottles of Richebourg from the Gros Family spanning 63 Years!
As Jasper Morris says "Richebourg is usually considered the grandest of the grand crus in the Village (Vosne-Romanee), apart from the monopoles of Romanee-Conti, La Romanee and La Tache."
The 8.03 hectares that make up this vineyard are divided amongst eleven owners. Domaine de la Romanee-Conti with 3.51 hectares are by far the largest. Next comes Leroy with 0.78 hectares.
But perhaps the most interesting holdings belong to the Gros family. In 1882 Louis-Gustave Gros acquired 2 ha of Richebourg - with the main part located in the Les Verroilles ou Richebourg section. In 1932 Louis Gros, the grandson became the owner. When Louis Gros passed away in 1951 his four children formed a joint ownership that was maintained until 1963 when the family holdings were split between the heirs.
Gustave Gros (1925-1984) and Colette Gros (1935-) joined forces in a new domaine - Gros Frere et Soeur, whereas Jean Gros (1927-) and Francois Gros (1931-2004) created the domaine Gros Pére et Fils. In 1973 Gros Pére et Fils was split and two new domaines were created - Domaine Jean Gros and Domaine Francois Gros.
Today, the Richebourg holdings are divided amongst three Gros families. The siblings Anne-Francoise (Domaine A-F Gros) and Bernhard (Domaine Gros F and S) and their cousin Anne (Domaine Anne Gros). Michel Gros, the brother of Anne-Francoise and Bernhard, opted to retain full control of Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Clos des Reas.
This dinner will trace the history of the Gros holdings in Richebourg. I am very fortunate to be able to include a Rare bottle of 1949 Richebourg from the grandfather Louis as well as the 1989 Richebourg from Francois Gros. To complete the lineup we have 3 different vintages of Richebourg from each of the current Gros domaines.
