An Extraordinary Collection of Back Vintages from Savigny-le-Beaune

Savigny Back Vintages
An Extraordinary Range of Back Vintages direct from the Domaine's Cellars - Great Vintages Galore - including 2002, 2001, 1999 and even 1971, 1969 and 1966!

Savigny-les-Beaune is an interesting area. Once considered the poor cousin of Beaune, things began to change in the 1980's when the prices for the Hospices de Beaune Savigny cuvees outstripped those from Beaune.

There are a number of things I particularly like about Savigny-les-Beaune. One is the mineral line that runs through the wines creating a freshness and vibrancy that isn't always seen in Beaune itself. The acid ensures serious ageing potential and I have seen numerous Savigny reds at 30-50 years of age that still drink incredibly well.

Then we have price. In most cases the wines of Savigny-les-Beaune represent tremendous value. The commune is rich in Premier Crus and the prices for these wines is on a small amount above Villages prices. There is serious value across the board. (The one exception is Domaine Leroy whose Savigny Narbantons from recent years sells for over $1000.00 in Australia! Go figure!).

Doudet_guettes Our friends at Doudet-Naudin have been an exceptional source for aged Burgundy. The cellars were stocked over the decades so the business could service fine restaurants with perfectly aged wine.

Amongst our last container was a box of samples that included a bottle of 2002 Savigny-les-Beaune Petits Liards, a Villages wines. I tasted the wine one evening and was amazed at how fresh and lively the wine was. It was nothing short of exceptional. So I contacted the domaine to see if they had any left. The sad answer was no but they did supply me with a tremendous selection of other Savigny-les-Beaune Red cuvees from their cellar going back to 1966! All of the wines have been stored in the domaine's cellars since bottling. They are as fresh as could be.

I have not sampled many of the wines but based on tastings of wines from the cellars back to the 1920's you can buy with great confidence.

With stocks of aged Red Burgundy becoming very difficult to find this offer is very special. Some wines are available in good quantities, others are down to the last case or less. Most of the great vintages of recent decades are represented including 2002, 2001, 1999, 1969 and 1966.

The wines are not on our website. The full offer can be viewed in PDF format by clicking here. To read about the vineyards click here.

First-in, first-served. All wines are available at our usual Pre Arrival Discount of 15%. Buy 2 or more cases from this offer (mix and match as you please) and we'll give you an additional 5% discount.

Bordeaux: The Legendary Years 1928-1961
Dinner at Circa
2 Seats left
Bordeaux is famous for both its classic, long ageing reds and luscious sweet wines. At this dinner we will taste a range of reds from many of the great vintages of the 20th  century and follow that up with a bracket of 50 plus year old stickies.
We will open 10 Reds from several of these great vintages including the exceptional 1945 Chateau Haut-Brion. Broadbent says of this wine "Another great wine. Consistently fine. One of Haut-Brion's best-ever vintage, 21 excellent notes, just one poor bottle. It seems to have regained depth of colour with age, again almost opaque but with mature amber rim. On nose and palate, it is different from its Medoc peers. More earthy, but not in a clodhopping way, and with a tobacco-like element to its taste. The bouquet variously described as gentle and fragrant, sweet, vanilla and chocolate, warm, spicy, complete - and always remarkably good. Pretty full-bodied, yet velvety, with load of sweetening and enriching alcohol, its tannin masked by richness and extract. Great length, wonderful aftertaste. 5 Stars"
