Decanter Magazine: "Champagne Salon's president has labelled the newly-released 2002 vintage as one of the best in memory, and said he is entirely relaxed about the house not making a vintage since 2008.

Didier Depond said Salon has produced only 62,000 bottles of the 2002 vintage, which he described during a launch event in London last week as 'one of the best vintages we have ever produced in Champagne'.

Some in Champagne have been accused of lavishing too much praise on too many vintages, but Depond does not appear prone to hyperbole. He has refused to make a vintage Champagne from 2009, '10, '11 and '12, 'because the quality was not at the right level'.

He compared the 2002 to 1982, an acclaimed vintage in Champagne. 'It has exactly the same character of wine as the 1982. You can see after 12 years the beautiful colour is still very pale, there is no oxidation, it hasn't gone gold, it still has a yellow/green colour which is a good sign for the potential of the wine, and there are also very tiny bubbles, which is for me one of the best signs of the quality.

'For me, the best time to drink this wine will be in five years.' The price, he added, looks reasonable compared to a first growth Bordeaux or Domaine de la Romanee-Conti wine.

The 2002 is the 38th vintage that Salon has released in its 100-year history. It is produced entirely from Chardonnay and is from a single cru in the Champagne region - vineyards surrounding Le Mesnil-sur-Oger."

Jancis Robinson: The nose is beautifully open - buttercream, bakery dough with a saline and flint character too. Impeccable but very subtle fruit. This is excellence done by degrees. There's a floral quality, and a smoky, reductive edge too. Even some honey. It's only just entering its drinking window. As is often said of the very best champagnes, this is wine first and sparkling second. 20/20

Bordeaux: The Legendary Years 1928-1961 Dinner

Bordeaux is famous for both its classic, long ageing reds and luscious sweet wines. At this dinner we will taste a range of reds from many of the great vintages of the 20th  century and follow that up with a bracket of 50 plus year old stickies.
We will open 10 Reds from several of these great vintages including the exceptional 1945 Chateau Haut-Brion. Broadbent says of this wine "Another great wine. Consistently fine. One of Haut-Brion's best-ever vintage, 21 excellent notes, just one poor bottle. It seems to have regained depth of colour with age, again almost opaque but with mature amber rim. On nose and palate, it is different from its Medoc peers. More earthy, but not in a clodhopping way, and with a tobacco-like element to its taste. The bouquet variously described as gentle and fragrant, sweet, vanilla and chocolate, warm, spicy, complete - and always remarkably good. Pretty full-bodied, yet velvety, with load of sweetening and enriching alcohol, its tannin masked by richness and extract. Great length, wonderful aftertaste. 5 Stars"
