Bordeaux is famous for both its classic, long ageing reds and luscious sweet wines. At this dinner we will taste a range of reds from many of the great vintages of the 20th century and follow that up with a bracket of 50 plus year old stickies.
Before the advent of the modern day wine writer the terms legendary, vintage of the century and the like were used with less gay abandon. Michael Broadbent was one of the first to write detailed vintage and tasting notes on Bordeaux and today his works remain a standard reference for Bordeaux drinkers. The 20th century saw some vintages that have, with age, cemented their place as legendary: 1900, 1920, 1926, 1928, 1929, 1945, 1947, 1949, 1953, 1959 and 1961 are universally regarded as all-time greats.
We will open 10 Reds from several of these great vintages including the exceptional 1945 Chateau Haut-Brion. Broadbent says of this wine "Another great wine. Consistently fine. One of Haut-Brion's best-ever vintage, 21 excellent notes, just one poor bottle. It seems to have regained depth of colour with age, again almost opaque but with mature amber rim. On nose and palate, it is different from its Medoc peers. More earthy, but not in a clodhopping way, and with a tobacco-like element to its taste. The bouquet variously described as gentle and fragrant, sweet, vanilla and chocolate, warm, spicy, complete - and always remarkably good. Pretty full-bodied, yet velvety, with load of sweetening and enriching alcohol, its tannin masked by richness and extract. Great length, wonderful aftertaste. 5 Stars"
We will also taste two very rare WWII bottlings, one from the Rothschild family who tell a fascinating story about the difficulties experienced during the war.
To follow the reds, instead of the usual Vintage Port, I have 4 different 50 plus year old Bordeaux stickies to taste and compare.
There are only 12 places for this dinner (including myself). The cost is $995.00 per Person.
