The story of Clos Vougeot begins in the late 11th century with the foundation of the Abbey of Citeaux and the acquisition of land.
The Cistercian monks planted vines on donated sites and at some stage, perhaps in 1336, a wall was built around the vineyards.
Clos-de-Vougeot, or Clos Vougeot as it is more frequently known, is the largest Grand Cru of Burgundy with an area of 50.96 hectares. It is a complex group of lieu-dits, with a significant slope and numerous different terroirs. At times some have classified the top portion of the vineyard as superior as the drainage is more efficient but Clos Vougeot is not that simple. For instance the terrific Clos Vougeot from Domaine Leroy comes from the bottom, southern corner which could easily be considered the worst part of the Clos.
One thing that is certain is that Clos Vougeot is one of the great cellaring wines of Burgundy. They are wines that are capable of 50 plus years of development becoming something truly special. These days few wines are consumed at such great age and the style of Clos Vougeot has become a little more modern without losing its unique character.
We have just been offered an additional 36 bottles of the 2010 Clos-de-Vougeot direct from the domaine's cellars. It is quite a bonus for us so we have decided to pass the joy on to our clients.

The Domaine's vines are in the southern part of the vineyard and occupy a long, narrow strip which, uncommonly, stretches from the bottom to the top of the vineyard. The variations in soil, slope and vine age throughout the vineyard make for a complex Clos-de-Vougeot.
Burghound: This is really quite elegant with airy and cool yet entirely ripe dark berry fruit aromas that are liberally laced with warm earth and very subtle oak hints. There is excellent intensity to the powerful and beautifully well-delineated large-scaled flavors that possess plenty of tannin-buffering dry extract, all wrapped in a classically austere, linear and explosive finish. A classic Clos de Vougeot where the phenolic ripeness is impeccable. Drink: 2025+. 92-94 Points
