Our next Rare Burgundy Dinner features an exciting selection of aged wines including several very rare and historic bottles.
After a glass of champagne on arrival we will get our palates tuned with a bracket of Chevalier-Montrachet.
We'll then launch into the first bracket of reds. Some big names including the magnificent 1971 DRC Grands-Echezeaux. From my experience the DRC's from 1971 are amongst the very best of the last 50 years. An aged Lamarche is quite unusual to find and the Chambertin from Domaine Marion now belongs to Domaine Rousseau. To finish this bracket we have a rare bottle of Romanee-St-Vivant bottled by General Marey-Monge. The Marey-Monge family purchased RSV after the French Revolution. The domaine was the source of Domaine de la Romanee-Conti's RSV. DRC leased the vineyard in 1966 and in 1988 when the vineyards were put up for sale DRC exercised their right of refusal option and purchased the land. I have never seen a bottle of this age from Marey-Monge.
The second red bracket also has some rare gems. Aged bottles of Clos des Lambrays and Clos de Tart are very valuable and promise something rather special. The Clos des Ruchottes from Thomas-Bassot was sold to Domaine Rousseau in 1977. To the best of my knowledge the first Rousseau vintage was 1978 so here we have another glimpse into the past. A classic 81 year old Dr Barolet and an 1928 Corton, one of the great 20th century vintages, complete the red lineup.
To follow is an interesting pair of aged Sauternes. Both domaines hold their wines in vat for extended periods and even though the wines are now 48 and 62 years old they look like relative babies. And to finish, a 68 year old bottle of vintage port, enough said!
This dinner will be at a new venue, Circa in St Kilda. Chef Ashly Hicks produces some great food and I am sure it will beautifully match the wines.
There are some historic and rare bottles and we will share them between 12 (including myself). The cost of the dinner is $1695.00 per Person, not at all bad when you consider the cost of current vintage DRC, Rousseau and other big names.
