The influence of Robert Parker has resulted in many rich and powerful wines in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Obviously this phenomenon is quite new. Chateauneuf-du-Pape of thirty years ago was a considerably more elegant wine, picked less ripe and vinified without the use of small oak barrels.
During a visit to all of our domaines in 2013 I was pleased to see that there is renewed interest in producing cuvees that are more perfumed and elegant with lower alcohol and higher drinkability.
Le Clos du Caillou has led the way with a new cuvee simply called "Tradition".

This new cuvee is produced from 100% Grenache grown on sandy soils. This is the recipe used for Chateau Rayas and it is a delight to see a return to this traditional style.
A wonderfully aromatic nose of raspberry, kirsch, smoke and minerals. The palate is remarkably elegant: add notes of liquorice and a stony coolness.
This wine is by no means a blockbuster. In fact it reminds me of Burgundy with its lilting aromatics, fine tannins and freshness. It is remarkable how similar ripe (not over-ripe) Grenache can be to Pinot Noir when it is grown on the right soils.
A terrific example of Grenache from the sandy soils of Chateauneuf-du-Pape.
It is not Chateau Rayas but the intent is there. This is a wine you will enjoy to drink, not just taste. Simply delicious! A Chateauneuf-du-Pape for Burgundy lovers!
