1964 Rioja - 51 Years Old and Still Going Strong‏

More incredible aged Rioja this time from the legendary 1964 Vintage

Yesterday's 1970 Rioja was very well received. A number of the wines have sold out with others well on the way.

Berberana 1964

Today we present the balance of the parcel. It includes 4 different wines from 1964 - 51 Years ago!

1964 is the only vintage of the 1960s to receive an Excellent rating from the Spanish DOC Rioja control board. It is often referred to in reverential tones as the historical best. There were only 26 bodegas producing and ageing wine in Rioja at that time of economic hardship and wine making style was very traditional and most likely only American oak was used for aging. These wines will present an opportunity to see the aged characteristics of a traditional Rioja from a mythical vintage.

Rioja is as age-worthy as the wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy, yet it flies under the radar compared to its more well-known peers. This means that a stellar bottle of aged or age-worthy Rioja can be procured for far less than a similarly rated bottle of Bordeaux or Burgundy. It remains a great bargain in today's wine world.

These 1964's are incredible buying at around the $200 mark per bottle. That is amazing for wines of this age. If you would like to try some classic old Spanish wine I suggest you get in quickly - these bottles will not last!
