A Gevrey Grand Cru for $148.00?
It is true but you will need to act quickly!
Gevrey-Chambertin is one of Burgundy's oldest vineyard sites with records detailing exceptional wines as far back at the 6th century.
It boasts more Grand Crus than any other village in Burgundy with a total of nine. These vineyards lie mid slope between about 260 and 300 metres above sea level.
The style of wine in Gevrey-Chambertin is more masculine than, say, Chabolle-Musigny or Vosne-Romanee. They are strong wines, full of earth and mineral notes, with the ability to age.
Of the Grand Crus Charmes-Chambertin is the most elegant. It combines the power of Gevrey with the seductive style of vineyards further south. The red soil, rich in chalky limestone, ensures both freshness and line.
Domaine Castagnier is yet another of those producers who enjoy some exceptional vineyard holdings and with a generational change we now see some high quality winemaking taking advantage of these sites.
The 2011 Charmes-Chambertin comes from a tiny 0.4 hectare parcel of 65 year old vines.
