From the lieu-dit of Grand Maupertuis this Clos Vougeot has plenty of style
It is often said that not all Clos Vougeot is created equal. It is a huge vineyard which varies in elevation, soil and drainage across its 50.96 hectares.
General concensus is that the best wines come form the highest parts of the vineyard where there is less clay in the soil and the drainage is better. It is hard to disagree, although some great wines are produced in the lower levels by diligent makers.
One of the top lieu-dits is Grand Maupertuis. It lies high on the slope adjoining Grands Echezeaux. It is here that Anne Gros makes her famous Clos Vougeot. It is also where Jerome Castagnier's plot lies.
Anne Gros' Clos Vougeot is always fragrant and dark with notes of black cherry, violet, spices and chocolate. No doubt this has something to do with the location alongside Grands Echezeaux. So it is not surprising that Jerome Chezeau's wine displays similar characteristics.
We import Anne Gros and the wines are fantastic. But they are not cheap. The 2011 Clos Vougeot was $399.00.
The 2011 Clos Vougeot from Jerome Castagnier is just $177.50 Pre Arrival. If you buy a Case this goes down to $167.20 a bottle. I think that is a bargain for a Grand Cru Burgundy from a top site on the Cote de Nuits.
We have 31 bottles of this wine left. The wine is enroute from France and will arrive at the end of this month. You can order single bottles on line. If you want a Complete Case please contact asaf.gordon@grandmillesime.com.au to obtain the extra discount.
