Perhaps once dismissed as the poor cousin, the Grand Crus of Aloxe-Corton are now gathering the attention of Burgundy lovers worldwide.
Something has happened in Corton.
A new generation of winemakers, perhaps a change in climate, and a growing awareness of the great terroir (exemplified by Domaine de la Romanee-Conti investing in the commune) has seen an enormous rise in the quality and drinkability of both white and red Corton.
The wines are exciting. The distinctive tannins of red Corton are now covered by rich and deeply flavoured fruit; the whites have body and complexity to match the great whites of the Montrachets. All the same time the top wines retain the unique minerality of Corton's terroirs.
The best thing is that (for the moment at least) Corton Grand Cru can still be purchased at prices equal to, and often below, the cost of Premier Crus from the Cote de Nuits.
In my mind that makes them brilliant value.
We have an excellent range of wines from Aloxe-Corton. Our selection includes 67 Grand Crus, including 9 top reds priced below $150.00!
