Chauvenet own parcels in seven Nuits Premier Crus including Les Vaucrains, Les Damodes and Les Bousselots but it is their small 0.23 hectare parcel in Les Perrieres that has me gob-smacked in 2016. The wine combines red and black fruits in a lifted, aromatic nose with minerals in spades. It is fresh and vibrant yet deeply flavoured with subtle spices playing in the background. 1/3 new oak contributes to the freshness and ensures the wine remains lifted and aromatic. This is really fine NSG Premier Cru with an elegant character yet never losing its stamp of origin. Only 3 barrels produced in 2016. Very fine quality.

Cask sample. Deepish cherry red. Much more open than the Damodes, spicy dark-red fruit and oak sweetness meshed on the nose, the oak quite obvious at the moment. Likewise on the palate, the oak is to the fore but has given a roundness to the relatively firm tannins. Dry and chewy on the finish. All to play for but overall an attractive dark, embryonic finesse. (JH)

(from a .23 ha parcel). A spicy and slightly fresher nose features notes of red and blue pinot fruit and menthol along with warm earth nuances. The seductively textured, round and well-concentrated medium-bodied flavors possess excellent complexity and a bit more refinement as well on the balanced and lingering finish that is markedly firm but not rally rustic. Very fine quality here and this is well-worth considering. (90-93)/2028+
