Domaine du Clos Frantin Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Malconsorts 2015 (4153)

France - Burgundy - Cote de Nuits - Vosne-Romanee
Pinot Noir

I tasted the wine a month ago (late November 2016) whilst in Burgundy. Red-black in colour, deep and rich to the eye. A little closed on the nose at first (as Malconsorts often is in its youth). Then black fruits with a symphony of spice. Minerals. Violets. Very structured, long. Powerful with soaring fruit and fine, chewy tannins. This is going to be a great Malconsorts - I believe the finest vintage since we started importing the wine in the 2009 vintage.

The Malconsort 2015 is also a big vinous wine. The nose offer plenty of ripe fruit – juicy and fresh – supported by a fine floral minerality – 50% whole cluster was used. On the palate intense, vinous and weighty – with a fine energy and balance despite the relatively high level of alcohol. It’s actually a quite elegant wine given it’s vinous character and there are no signs of overripeness. A very fine Malconsort in the making ..

(from a whopping 1.76 ha parcel). A notably ripe and wonderfully spicy nose reflects notes of liqueur-like dark cherry, cassis, plum and violet. The dense, serious and markedly powerful big-bodied flavors brim with dry extract before terminating in a muscular and impressively long finish that also displays a hint of warmth. This is an imposingly-scaled and quite firmly structured effort that will require 12 to 15 years of bottle to arrive at its apogee. Patience. (91-94)/2027+
