Bill Nanson "The Burgundy Report"

Almost 1 ha north after the Clos des Ducs, the only Volnay of the domaine on this side of the village. More grey and white clay here.

A more top to bottom nose, narrower, but no less interesting. Mouth-filling and with a weight but no obvious extra texture or fat. Another wine with waves of finishing flavour, here with some tannin, faintly grained, if less ‘sticky’ than some. Super wine.

(from 35+ year old vines). In the same fashion as the several of the prior wines there is a touch of prune present though in this case it is quite subtle and doesn’t fight with the aromas of violet, earth, licorice and dark berries. There is excellent size, weight, richness and power to the big-bodied and concentrated flavors that for all the punch manage to remain refined on the balanced and hugely long finish. Like the Champans this is a big and very structured wine that, because of the slightly fresher nose, gives me a bit more confidence for its longer-term prospects. 91/2030+

Vinous: Stephen Tanzer

(20% vendange entier): Medium bright red. A note of reduction to the redcurrant and smoky mineral aromas. At once thick and vinous, with a dense grain, but quite unforthcoming today. Not at all a sweet style, this premier cru finishes with strong tannic clout and a slightly dry medicinal quality. This rather masculine wine from the north side of the appellation is more massive but less liquid than the foregoing Volnay samples and will take longer to open.
