Domaine Jean Durup Chablis 1er Cru L'Homme Mort 2014 (3793)

Domaine Jean Durup Chablis 1er Cru L'Homme Mort 2014 (3793)

France - Chablis

L'Homme Mort is a climat of the Premier Cru Fourchaume. Austin Biss, in his standard reference A Guide to the Wines of Chablis says "L'Homme Mort, a climat within  Fourchaume, is located at the northern end towards Maligny and is a special favourite particularly in the hands of Domaine Jean Durup who own a large parcel - the wine displays an attractive earthy flavour with an added dimension. Jean-Paul says that the name is attributed to the number of miscreants buried there after being hanged near the Chateau de Maligny just up the road, before he took over that is".

A bit closed, so at the start, it is all chalk and little fruit. Give it some air and time, and notes of lemon and apricot begin to show, alongside a salty chalk note on the finish. Every time I drink one, I can’t help but think what a wonderful and unique wine is Chablis. Residual sugar: 1.5 g/L. Serve at 10-12C. Drink now-2018. Food pairing idea: Apéritif, raw oysters, lobster.

Tout Sur le Vin

It is this windfall bringing up the rear with a Chardonnay finesse where lemon holds the top billing , with co-star peach and apricot . It is bright as must a windfall, but with a little more flattering plump on the palate . Always with this frank chalky minerality from home Maligny . Why the dead man , I tell you ? This is one of the eight localities that comprise this first vintage Fourchaumes.

The Durups have an impressive and interesting array of Premier Crus including Montee de Tonnerre, Fourchaume, Montmains, Vau de Vay and the sinisterly named L'Homme Mort.
